These include visible cracking or bulging in a slope or retaining structure, sudden or accelerating movement detected by monitoring, active rockfall or debris onto a road, path or occupied area, and loss of support beneath a structure following heavy rain or a nearby excavation.
Asset owners and site managers who notice any of these signs should treat the situation as urgent and seek a qualified assessment as soon as possible, rather than waiting to see whether the movement continues. Early intervention is almost always cheaper and safer than responding after a slope has fully failed.
Temporary Protection and Access Controls
While a permanent stabilisation design is developed, temporary measures are often needed to manage risk in the meantime. These can include exclusion zones and fencing around the affected area, temporary drainage to reduce water loading on the slope, rock catch fencing or netting to intercept falling material, and monitoring instruments to track any further movement.
Temporary protection measures are not a substitute for a proper engineered solution, but they buy time to investigate ground conditions properly and design a permanent fix, rather than rushing into permanent works without adequate information. Shotcrete, Anchors, Soil Nails and Drainage Options
Once the ground conditions and failure mechanism are understood, a permanent or semi-permanent stabilisation solution is designed to suit the specific site. Options commonly include shotcrete facing to protect and reinforce an exposed cut or rock face, ground anchors to tie unstable ground back into stable material beyond the failure plane, soil nailing to reinforce the slope in place, and drainage works to reduce the water pressure that often triggers or accelerates slope movement in the first place.
Most emergency responses combine several of these elements, since a single measure rarely addresses both the immediate risk and the underlying cause. For sites outside our core service areas, we can still assist with engineering assessment and remote advice, and will be upfront about realistic mobilisation timeframes for physical works so that asset owners can make informed decisions about interim risk management.

To respond quickly and accurately, we typically need clear information about the site and the nature of the ground movement. This includes the site address and access details, recent photographs or video of the affected area, a description of when the movement was first noticed and how it has changed since, and any existing geotechnical reports or drawings for the site if available.
Details of any nearby structures, roads, services or occupied areas at risk are also important, since these directly affect how urgently a response is needed and what temporary protection measures might be appropriate in the meantime. The more accurate information we receive upfront, the faster we can mobilise the right resources.
Safety, Permits and Design Responsibility
Emergency works still need to meet the same safety and design standards as planned projects, even under time pressure. Our teams work to documented safe work method statements, and any permanent stabilisation design is signed off by a suitably qualified engineer before it is relied on as a long-term solution. Permits and approvals required for the specific site and works are identified early, since skipping this step to save time can create bigger problems later, including invalid insurance cover or unauthorised works on public or shared infrastructure.
